Historical culture of the 1967-1974 dictatorship in Greece

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate aspects of the historical culture of Greek society during the dictatorship of 1967-1974, the so-called April Junta, a period considered a rupture in the course of contemporary Greek history. As we already know from other case studies, periods of dense political transformation tend to be periods of broader changes in collective narratives as well, thus the study of their historical culture is very fruitful. Given that the Junta attempted to “command” national history in order to legitimize itself, this dissertation specifically explores the regime and its historical imagination, as well as the ways in which it attempted to impose this historical imagination and, finally, the responses of the people.
